Ectoine Powder 99% | Barrier Repair & Hydration Active

Product Introduction

Ectoine, a natural extremolyte produced by desert halophilic bacteria to survive extreme salt, drought, and UV stress, forms a protective "hydration shell" around skin cells and biomolecules. It delivers deep moisturization, strengthens the skin barrier, soothes irritation, and shields against UV and pollution — a versatile, clinically-validated active for sensitive and stressed skin.

Overview. Ectoine (Tetrahydromethylpyrimidine Carboxylic Acid, "Ectoine", C6H12N2O2) is a low-molecular-weight cyclic amino acid derivative first discovered in halophilic microorganisms thriving in highly saline environments such as salt lakes. These extremophiles synthesize ectoine to balance osmotic pressure and protect their cellular machinery under conditions that would destroy ordinary cells. YaoSynBio manufactures ≥99% purity white to grayish-white crystalline ectoine via an efficient red yeast fermentation process (Patent CN116855523A), delivering a natural-origin, eco-friendly, and highly consistent ingredient.

Mechanism of Action. Ectoine functions through a unique "preferential exclusion" mechanism: each ectoine molecule binds and organizes surrounding water molecules into a stable, gel-like hydration shell — sometimes called "ectoine water" — that envelops proteins, cell membranes, and the skin surface. This hydration shell stabilizes native protein structures, maintains cell volume and turgor under osmotic stress, and dramatically improves skin hydration and barrier integrity. The protective layer also physically shields skin cells from external aggressors including UV-induced damage, infrared radiation, airborne particulate pollution, and surfactants, while reducing inflammation markers and soothing reactive, irritated skin.

Applications. Recommended at 0.5%–3%, ectoine is water-soluble, colorless, odorless, and exceptionally well-tolerated — suitable even for baby care and post-procedure skin. It is widely used in moisturizers, barrier-repair creams, soothing serums, sunscreens and after-sun products, eye care, and anti-pollution urban skincare. It is a benchmark active for sensitive-skin, dermatological, and "skinimalism" formulations, and combines beautifully with ergothioneine, centella asiatica, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid. Regulatory status: EU CosIng-listed under EC 1223/2009; FDA-compliant for cosmetic use in the US.
